Dear Mr._Rivas:

4 This _is provided in response to your September 14, 1981 letterd Michk you requested information about methods of decontamination and o'pei~ator license exams at Three Mile Island (TMI),

f Most recently the licensee has begun the decontamination of radioactively l

. contaminated water which has been contained in the reactor building basement l

since the accident. To facilitate this, the licensee is using a Submerged Domineralizer System (SDS) located in the Unit 2 fuel pool. The SDS makes use of inorganic zeolites to remove radioactivity (primarily Cesium and Strontium) from the water. For your information, I have enclosed a copy of the NRC staff's Safety Evaluation Report on the SDS.

The NRC does not as a matter of policy furnish copies of operator lice:1se examinations. I hope, however, that the information oli the SDS process useful.

l Sincerely, i

Bernard J. Snyder, Program Director TMI Program Office Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
