SUBJECT:

AUDIT OF RISO FISSI0tJ GAS RELEASE DATA Enclosed are the results of five high-burnup fission gas release calculations based upon Riso !!ational Laboratory data (Ref.1-2). These calculations were performed by !!. J,. Wise using P,evision 1 of the GAPC0!!-THER!!AL-2 code (Ref. :3).

The purpose of the analysis tras to compre the fission cas release predicted by the GAPCCl! code to that produced experirentally in the DR3 reactor at Riso.

Results of the conparison are given in Table 1.

The first two pins in the table (PA29-4 and I;2-2C) were irradiated to nearly 40,000 I"d/MtU uith cnly noderate variations in linear pcuer rating. The last three pins were irradiated to approxinately 27,000 t'Wd/MtU, ther racped to high power and held for several weeks before the test was ended.

Audit calculations of these Danish high-burnup data have been previously performed by the staff (Ref. 4-5).

However, the following items should be noted:

The three ramped pins have been added to the data base. Some of the earlier data have been revised and all data are now publicly available (Ref.1-2).

- All five pins form part of the staff's fuel performance benchmark data base.

The Riso data have been provided to all fuel vendors and predictions have teen acdc by Ceneral Electric end !!estinghcuse.

- A revised version of GAPC0t!-THERMAL-2 was used to perform calculations given in Table 1.

Results using FRAPCON-1 (Ref. 6) and GAPC0t!-3 (using the A!!S-5.4 fission gas release rodel (Ref. 7)) have also been obtained.

Although the GAPC0H-2 predictions compare reasonably with the three rarped rods, our calculations continue to significantly overpredict the experimental release from rods PA-29 and M2-2C. These results were obtained in spite of our efforts to use best-estimate optiens and to avoid simplifications in use of the experi-mental data. We conclude that, for the experimental conditions given, GAPC0f!-2 continues to exhibit intrinsic thermal conservatisms. This problem is being discussed with the code developer, Battelle Pacific !!orthwest laboratories.
