Jr.nuary 5, 1981 The Honorable John F. Ahearne, Chairpersen U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission I,
Vashington, D. C.
20555 -
Dear Commissioner Ahearnet As you iciov it has been over 1 and 3/4 years since the accident at Three Mile Island. In as much as TMI I was not involved 1.1 the accident j
and apparently is safe to operate, say I urge you to use your influence to j
restart this plant as soon as possible for the following reasons:
- l.. We need all of the nuclear power we can generate in our country to l
reduce our dependence on foreign energy scurces. This would help our j
balance of paynents and help fight inflatian by reducing the cost of pro-j ducing electric power.
j 2.
It is extremely unfair for our gavernment to encourage utilities for nany years to invest billions of dolls s in nuclear power, and yet when one of these corporations has an accident, as G.P.U. (Met-Ed) had in TMI 2
)
that the other unit, TMI 1 which was not 1.:volved, would not be allowed to restart for a period going on two years.
l 3.
A regulatsd industry such as G.PI. has to be financially healthy i
in order to fulfill its obligatica to fur = sh power to the custo=ers it was i
licensed to serve. It should not be depri ed of the incone that TMI 1 could generate.
I guess I'm just asking for simple jrstice.
j Tour help in allowing TMI 1 to restar at the earliest opportunity would bei appreciated.
Sincerely,
- 0. h. Dh A. M. Olen
