Dear Tr. Morris:
This letter confirms the telephone conversation today regarding clarification of several points in my letter of April 12, 1967.
In the first sentence of the third paragraph on page 1 reference is made to using the " dye-penetrant technique" for inspec'-
tion of the reactor vessel cladding.
We have now completed ~this phase of the program.
We found that due to the level of wat'er with-in the reactor vessel required to minimize radiation from the reacto:
vessel internals during this inspection, we were unable to use dye-1 penetrant tests.
However, we were successful in conducting an extensive ultrasonic and viru 11 examination of this region.
No cracks or. flaws were detected.
The fourth sentence in paragraph five on page 2 -should be revised to read:
"Two short circumferential flaws extending through less than 10% of the wall thickness on the inside of the bypass pipe were-found in D compartment but were not repaired, because it was desired to develop by subsequent re-examination infornation with respect to possible propaga-tion of such flaws.
These flaws were re-examined during the current outage and no propagation was detected."
The second paragraph on page 3 should be deleted completely, since this information is now incorporated in the revision to page 2.
Please let me know if I can provide any further information.
Very truly yours, g
