- ran 2d Comnenwealth Edison Connany execntion fren the recu;r?-
cents of Parar, raph 20.203(c)-2 of 10 C 1 20 which portains to the use of visible and audible alarns for high radittien areas.
Two revisions to this exenption are recuested:
I.
Continued reactor operations, additions and/or 'odifications of equienent have contributed to increases in radiation levels in various arets of the, lant.
In certain instances these increases have been of such nnnitude that their status has been chance te "!!i;h ladiation trea".
iherever possible, corrective reasures.have been taken to clininate these i, creases, however, in a few instances these acasures have been impractical or without si?,nificant effect.
Those areas wherein dose rates could not be-decreased have been established as permanent high radiation areas and have been properly posted and-included in Dresden's locked high radiation area procedure.
The following high radiation areas have been added to those described in our application of April 17, 1962 and Connon-wealth Edison hereby reqmests that the procedures referred to in that application and the exemption granted by your letter of August 23, 1.962 be extended to cover these areas, outlined by a double broken black line on the attached sketches.
(a)
In the August 23 letter and in our request dated
.\\p ri l 17, 1962, it was noted that there was one high radiation area adjacent to the :iigh pressure end of the turhinc shich was enclosed by a fence with a locked gate.

The cause of the increase in radiation level is the gradual accumulation of deposits fron reactor water in the reactor scran dump' tank located in this area.
i (c)
The "off-gas" noniters,. located'as shown on Sketch E, are equipped with condensers for renoving noisture from the sample.
These condensers accumulate radio-active deposits to the extent that the aren has been posted as a "!!igh ladiation Area".
II.
The letter of August 23, 1962Lalso approved'the' procedures outlined in our recuest of April 17, 1962 concerning the number and use of keys to the locks on the controlled areas.
This provided for one key to be available during operation i-and three keys during plant shutdown.
Experience with the increased nunber of high radiation areas has demonstrated that the use of ene key during operations is inadequate and causes objectionabic delays in. returning.
the single key sa that other areas nay be entered.
This.is especially true~durint the day' shift when the maintenance force is doing work in a high radiation area.
There are.

It will be kept..in the control roon when not in use and will-be issued by the Shift Sn.;ineer.
