Dear 31r or Madamt n h@;*.-

As representatives of the International Brotherhood of Elect;ical Workers, I,ocal 8, we arc desirottn of calli.ng your attention to a serious prcblem which presently conf ronts the union 's member.; hip.

Recently the two electric companies completed t.he constru Lion af a nuclear power f acility in Fort Clinton, Ohio [Davi.s-Reeme) which becar.e operational in Austtr of thin year.

Ac with nout mudern technological cdvanccracnts dortej n problems have occurred which were i

not originally anticipated.

Speci.:1cally, union members have been c=g-loyed as skilled olectricians to perform maintenance and other tcchnical functicas at the plant.

Pursuant to the direct.tves issued by the employers, these employees who are exposed to radiation and.o a result of '4hich tJ1eir chemical composition reflects a th..ee percent (3%) absorpM.cn faction are required to be - eemoved Crom ttin jcb.

While this ti,e+;per.:.mt f actor is well below a lethal dese, it certainly renders e,@nempliyjce so expcsed ineligible for further work within the vicidig.

..On bshalf of the union memborohip I nurit etuicove r r.o prctect thm welf are of those worker.s.

During the course of centract negotictions ve will stx.ive ' to increase health benefi En whic:4 wi11 l

provide medical tr m 62nt for union member.'. with a three percent l

cxposure factor.

Ecwtver, this will be oxbrumely dif ficult at best.

ih: 3 is why 1. am seeking your assistance.

This exposure problem invariably depletes t.he union's and this country 's nos L prcciouc resource - Workers; in that each member who hac a three pt rcent radiatica lcVel must be replaced.

An t.ime prog.o>. inn Local 5 will eventually be unable to supply the neccucary labor and the sub-centractor will be forced to ferret out new sources of manpower thereby r

each individual worker so replaced i

replacing this union.

Moreover, becot.es unsmp'oyed and ineligible for f tA w eu.ploymenE.

'N rage 2 in directing ycur,:sttention to this dilemma we hope that you will he zble to exert pressure so that some res.edy will be provided these enplayer to employ the worker (-}cislation or regulations requiring the individuals, either through s

at a different location or compensatory benefite for the workers.

We understand that this indeed jo a difficult prchlem, but it is critical that the union membership receive 'pr.ot.cction.

I hope that you will assis t this Union in protecting itu u:e:aberu.

Most likely there are inany other unions and workers which f ace thin same problem.

Thank you for your time and underutanding.

Sincere 1f,
