Sowling Green,.Chio 43402 3 June 1972 Dr. Jance R. Schlesinger, Chairman Atomic Energy Commiscion Washington, u.C.

Dear Dr. Senlesinger,

According to a recent article in'the'3cwlins Green newc-taper, Toledo Edicon and -Cleveland Electric Illum$ nating unvc received a go-ahead-for continued construction of the Davis-Scsse nuclear power plant.

~

The utilities claim that the Davis-Besse plant is n6cessary to supply ncrthwest Ohio with electricity--that there may be power short"ges if it is not built.

(It would seem that the utilitics are intent on fulfilling this prophecy via their advertising campaigns for "the all-electric kitchen", "the all-electric yard", etc.)

Do you think that the AEC and the public are fully aware of and willin6 to face up to the adverse effects which widesprend proliferation of nuclear plants will have on the natural environ-ment and on human health?

Regnrdless~of-how much we need power, the following items muct be heeded:

1 )"There 10 no safe amount of radiation in so far as genetic effects are concerned.

However small the quantity absorbed mankind must be prepared to pay the price." (THE GESETIC EFFECTS OF RADIATION, issued by the AEC) 2)"There is no miniuum amount of r9diation which must be exceeded before mutations occur.

Any amount, however small, th?t reaches the reproductive cells can cause a correspondingly small number of mutations.

The more radiation, '.he-more muta-tiens."

(NATICNAL ACADEXY OF SCIENCES)

3) An article in the January 25, 1971-issue of the '1011 Street Courn,1 warns.about the dangere involved in dinposing of. anc storin5 the radioactive' wastes produced by nuclear plants.
4) Raising the temperature of Lake Eric's waters will cause a longer growing season for the same blue-Brcen algae which rendered the water supplies of Kelley's Island and. ?ut-In-Bay nearly. unusable last_ summer. ( See enclosure. )-
