We received your letter, dated June 13,1998, in which you requested approval of your Quality
=-
Assurance (QA) program. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) published a final rule, effective June 27,1997, revising the requirements of 10 CFR Part 34, " Licenses for Industrial Radiography and Radiation Safety Requirements for industrial Radiographic Operations." The revision, which contained numerous changes in these requirements, also modified the QA program requirements for transportation. As a result of these changes, an NRC-approved QA j
program for the use and maintenance of transport packages for radiographic exposure devices is not needed.
Specifically regarding transportation activities, a new paragraph,10 CFR 71.101(g), provides that inspection and maintenance programs for organizations whose activities are limited to radiographic exposure devices, source changers, or packages transporting these devices satisfy f
the generallicense requirements specified in 10 CFR Part 71.12(b) for Type B transport packages. Please note that these inspection and maintenance programs must continue to meet the provisions of 10 CFR Part 34.31(b) or equivalent Agreement State regulations.
