April 29, 1993 CHAIRMAN The Honora L Marilyn Lloyd, Cnairman Subcomittee on Energy Comittee on Science, Space, and Technology United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C.

Dear Madam Chairman:

On behalf of the Comission, I am responding to your letter of April 6,1993, in which you comented on the importance of completing the reviews of both the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) and the System 80+ designs as quickly as possible. The timely completion of these reviews remains one of the Comission's most important priorities, and we will continue to make the necessary resources available to pursue certification of both of these evolutionary designs.

The NRC staff is developing the final safety evaluation reports for the ABWR and the System 80+ designs. This is the culmination of years of vendor and staff effort to identify and resolve technical and policy issues that affect the designs.

In SECY-93-041, " Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) Review Schedule," the staff proposed an aggressive review schedule for that design. The Comission has just received SECY-93-097, which contains the revised integrated review schedule for the evolutionary and advanced light water reactor designs.

I am enclosing a copy of SECY-93-097 for your information.

We are also sensitive to the role that our design review may have in the international market. We have been and will continue to be responsive to vendor requests that are needed to ensure that U.S. suppliers are not disadvantaged in international competitions.

We will keep you informed about the schedules for our reviews of the evolu-tionary and advanced passive light water reactors.

Sincerely,

  1. )!
