Docket Nos. 50-317

50-318

Mr. Robert E. Denton

Vice President - Nuclear Energy

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant

1650 Calvert Cliffs Parkway

Lusby, Maryland 20657 - 4702

Dear Mr. Denton:

Subject:

Combined Inspection Nos. 50-317/93-09 and 50-318/93-09

This letter refers to the safety inspection conducted by Mr. J. Kottan and Ms. N. McNamara

of this office on March 29 - April 2,1993, of activities authorized by NRC License Nos.

DPR-53 and DPR-69 at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, Lusby,

Maryland, and to the discussions of our findings held by Mr. Kottan and Ms. McNamara with

Mr. P. Chabot and other members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

i

Areas examined during this inspection are important to public health and safety, and are

i

described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative

records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspectors.

In addition, our Mobile laboratory was brought to your site and used by the inspectors to make

certain independent measurements. The basic purpose of these independent measurements is to

,

verify your capability for analyzing radioactive effluents, and to achieve and maintain

comparable methods of analyses between your facility and the NRC. The data from these

measurements are included in this report with the exception of the wet chemistry results, which

will be documented in a subsequent inspection report.
