U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Mail Station F1-137 l

Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

DOCKETS 50-266 AND 50-301 RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 92-08 THERMO-LAG 330-1 FIRE BARRIERS l

POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 NRC Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers,"

l dated December 17, 1992, requires each licensee to provide a l

written report within 120 days regarding the installation of l

Thermo-Lag.330-1 fire barriers in their plants.

As stated in our July 21, 1992 response to NRC Bulletin 92-01,

" Failure of Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barrier System to Maintain Cabling in Wide Cable Trays and Small Conduits Free from Fire Damage," Wisconsin Electric does not use Thermo-Lag 330 fire barrier systems at its Point Beach Nuclear Plant (PBNP).

INTERAM, a fire-rated barrier system manufactured by the 3M Corporation, has been installed at PBNP on selected raceways to provide separation between redundant shutdown trains to meet i

the requirements of 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, Section III.G.2,

" Fire Protection of Safe Shutdown capability."

Based on the manufacturer's technical information and our preliminary review of the issues identified in Generic Letter 92-08, the INTERAM fire barrier system is capable of performing its intended function at l

PBNP.

l l

Wisconsin Electric is continuing to review and evaluate the information and issues resulting from the Thermo-Lag investigation.

If any future problems with the INTERAM fire barrier system are identified as a result of these evaluations, Wisconsin Electric will promptly inform you of such problems and our-corrective action (s).
