SUBJECT: REACTIVE SAFETY INSPECTION AT THE UNIVERSITY 0F MISSOURI-COLUMBIA
RESEARCH REACTOR
This refers to the reactive safety inspection conducted by Messrs. C. Cox and
D. Nelson of this office and Mr. A. Adams from the office of Nuclear Reactor
Regulation on March 9-II,1993. The inspection included a review of
.

authorized activities for the University of Missouri (Columbia) Research
Reactor facility. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were
'
discussed with those members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.
,
Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within
'
these areas, the inspection consisted of an examination of material-
irradiation records and meeting minutes of the Shipping Task Group and related
i
subcommittees, interviews with personnel, and observation of material.
,
irradiation activities in progress.
,

One unresolved item regarding identification of' isotopes and curie content of
shipments of radioactive material was identified during the course of _this -
.
inspections.
Resolution of the item is pending further review by NRC staff.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC.
