SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-309/93-05
This letter refers to the safety inspection of engineering and technical support activities
related to the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station (MYAPS) conducted by

Mr. A. Lohmeier of this office during the period February 22-26,1993, in Wiscasset,
Maine. At the conclusion of the inspection,' his findings were discussed with Mr. Blackmore
'
and members of the MYAPS engineering and licensing staff.

The scope of this inspection included review of your engineering and technical support
effectiveness in resolving a reactor coolant pump vibration pioblem, responsiveness to
.
Generic Letter 92-01 related to reacter vessel material integrity surveillance, and primary
component transient operating cycle monitoring. As the plant increases in age, it is
important to have identified those component and piping areas approaching the numbers of
transient cycles for which they have been designed. Effective performance in these areas by
,

your engineering and technical support personnel is important to the stle operation of the
plant and protection of public health and safety.

Based on the results of this inspection, your engineering and technical support staff was
found to have effectively addressed these areas, providing for an engineered corrective action
-
plan in the case of reactor coolant pump vibration, giving a comprehensive response to
Generic Letter 92-01 related to NRC concerns regarding reactor pressure vessel material
integrity surveillance, and properly recording and evaluating the effect of plant operating
,

cycles on remaining life of primary components.
