17 Mr. Charles E. MacDonald, Chief Transportation Branch Office of Safeguards and Transportation and Safeguards U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555
Dear Mr. MacDonald:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted an. audit of the TRUPACT-II Quality Assurance (QA) Program January 12-14, 1993, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The audit was completed with no findings of nonconformance or violations. However, one open issue remained at the time of the Exit Briefing and that was Nuclear Packaging, Incorporated (NuPac) supplier audits were not available for review.
On February 1, 1993, Alton Harris of my staff spoke with John Jankovic regarding the NuPac supplier audits.
The Westinghouse Waste Isolation Division is now in possession of the requested audits and is prepared to transmit the package to the NRC for its review.
I understand NRC has decided to postpone its review of the NuPac supplier audits until the NRC conducts a future audit of the TRUPACT-II QA Program. Further, I understand that NRC's final report will not be influenced by the lack of reviewing the NuPac supplier audits.
Please have your staff contact Alton Harris at (301) 903-8466, if your staff should desire to review the NuPac supplier audits before the next audit of the TRUPACT-II QA Program.
