February 22, 1993 The Honorable Paul S. Sarbanes United States Senate Washington, DC 20510-2002
Dear Senator Sarbanes:
I am writing in response to your letter dated January 8,1993, requesting that your office be apprised when the determination is made of which agency, the General Services Administration or the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), will be responsible for remediating the radioactive contamination at the former DLA depot in Curtis Bay, Maryland.
On January 29, 1993, Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff were informed by telephone that DLA has assumed lead agency responsibility for remediating the Curtis Bay Site.
NRC staff received written confirmation that DLA would assume the lead for remediating the site on February 2, 1993.
DLA is currently preparing a plan and schedule for remediating the site.
DLA has committed to provide a conceptual decontamination plan and schedule to NRC in 4-6 weeks. We will provide your office with copies of the plan and schedule as soon as it has been developed. As this plan is developed, NRC staff will work with DLA to ensure that the plan fully addresses the remediation of the Curtis Bay site and provides adequate protection of the public health and safety.
If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
Sincerely,
