Dear Mr. Opeka:

RJones

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 92-04, " RESOLUTION OF THE ISSUES RELATED TO REACTOR VESSEL WATER LEVEL INSTRUMENTATION IN BOILING WATER REACTORS" (TAC NO. M84289)

This letter acknowledges receipt of Northeast Nuclear Energy Company's (NNECO's) response of September 25, 1992, to Generic Letter (GL) 92-04 GL 92-04 was issued by letter dated August 19, 1992, to all operating boiling water reactor licensees.

GL 92-04 requested licensees to promptly assess the impact on their facilities of potentially erroneous level indication due to non-condensible gases, and to implement compensatory measures and long term corrective actions as necessary.

NNEC0's September 25, 1992, letter described its engineering evaluation and completed modifications to the reactor vessel water level instrumentation.

Specifically, the modifications involved the addition of tubing, valves, and flow control and measuring devices to interconnect the water supplied to the control rod drive system with the reference legs to provide a constant purge fl ow.

The modification was designed to prevent the buildup of non-condensible gases in the reference legs.

The NRC staff has reviewed NNEC0's modifications and find them acceptable.

It is requested that NNECO inform the NRC, following the next scheduled outage, on the success of their modifications to the reactor vessel water level instruments.
