MKW Power Systems received notification on 2/2/93 from Electro-Motive Division, General Motors Corporation (EMD) about a potential defect with connecting rod basket nuts (EMD #8487883) shipped since January 1992.
These nuts may have threads that are not square to the load bearing surface.
The suspect nuts can easily be identified by the color of the nylon insert (white or purple).

DEFECT Some nuts were manufactured with threads that are not square to the load bearing surface.
The suspect nuts have white or purple colored nylon inserts and were first received at EMD in January 1992.
Nuts having red or green nylon inserts are acceptable for use.
CORRECTTVE ACTTON Nuts may have been shipped separately, as part of a Connecting Rod Hardware Kit, or as part of a Fork Rod Power Pack Assembly.
Users listed under the Customers Affected section of this document should perform the following l
1)
Remove all stocked nuts with white or purple inserts l
and return to MKW Power Systems for replacement.
i l
2)
If any of the shipped components have been installed in the engine, inspect each fork connecting rod for nuts with white or purple inserts.
All nuts with white or purple inserts should be replaced.

l When replacing suspect nuts on a connecting rod, replace one nut at a time, torque and then proceed to another nut.
Refer to Parts List No. A07 of Exhibit 1.
Remove one nut
(#8487883) and its corresponding bolt (#8259128), and two (2) washers (#8260114) from the connecting rod.
Replace with a new nut (#8487883), new bolt (#8259128), and new washer (#8260114).
Torque to 75 5 ft-lbs.

On 2/2/93, MKW received notification from Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation (EMD) of a potential defect with j
connecting rod basket nuts (EMD #8487883) shipped since February 1992 (see attachment).
These nuts may have threads that are-not square to the load bearing surface.
The suspect nuts can easily be identified by the color of the nylon insert (white or purple).
Nuts with red or green nylon inserts are acceptable for use.
We are in the process of reviewing our files to determine the users affected by this notification.
When our review is completed, a formal report will be issued.
