-The Commission was briefed by the staff on the status of

activities of the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CHWRA),

The Commission was given an update by Mr. J.

Latz and

~

Mr. W. Patrick, CNWRA, concerning specific research~and technical assistance projects being conducted by the Center.

The Commission:

1.

Commended the Center and-NRC staff for the extra efforts that were involved in the start-up.of? Center activity; 2.

Encouraged continued emphasis on-staff development both at the Center and the'NRC;-

3.

Encouraged the staff.to move forward as quickly.as possible to recommend priorities and1the means of reducing regulatory uncertainties that have-been identified by the-Center so that the results can be factored'as early as possible into the development of rulemaking and guidance; and 4.

Noted the staff intends to provide the Commission with-an update of SECY-88-285'(Regulatory-Strategy and Schedules:

for the High-Level' Waste Repository Program) in early May 1990.-

' ' Commissioner Remick commended the staff and the Center for a thorough systematic analysis'of 10 CFR Part 60.

-He encouraged the staff to consider having a qualified independent body prepare a, systematic analysis of requirements for the licensing of other facilities, such as an enrichment facility.
