i ALL AGREEMENT STATES PHYSICIAN INTERPRETATION OF RADIONUCLIDE STUDIES (SP.9063)

Enclosed for your information is a letter from the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to the American College of Cardiology explaining our policy on the interpretation of radionuclide studies.

Prior to the comprehensive revision of 10 CFR Part 35, effective April 1 1987, guidance on authorized physician duties and responsibilities were outlined in Regulatory Guide 10.8 Revision 1.

These duties included the selection of patients, selection of the radio)harmaceuticals, and the interpretation of patient images or data.

With tie revision of Part 35, the first two duties were incorporated into the new regulation, but the statement regarding interpretation of patient images or data was dropped.

The interpretation of patient images or data is considered to be within the practice of medicine and outside the scope of NRC regulations.
