STATUS MEETING ON DURANGO ON FEBRUARY 22, 1990 At the request of DOE,' a' status' meeting for the Durango site was held in Albuquerque on February 22, 1990.
The agenda-and a list of attendees.are provided'as attachments.
The major items of discussion included: -whether or--
not'it-wo'uld be beneficial to continue pumping to dewater the cell; results of the site ground-water characterization activities; the possibility of a revised (l
cover design; and the proposed schedule for this construction season.
-Cell-Dewatering DOE presented-arguments.against using the: existing _ wells-to dewater the cell, and: argued that'the toe drain will adequately dewater the relocated tailings.
Studies.are currently being conducted to determine the estimated time for the-toe drain to~dewater the cell.
Site-Characterization Fourteen additional wells, completed in either the alluvium or the deep aquifer, have been drilled to help evaluate the current conditions at the site.
Water quality results, for wells 608 (near the cell) and 606 (downgradient) were presented and discussed.
Further analysis of these wells and other wells will be completed.'
Cover Desian Due to inflating cost of " Clay-Max," DOE is in the process of evaluating a revised' cover design.
A final decision is to be reached on February 28, 1990.
If DOE decides to eliminate the current design, the revised design is to be formalized and submitted by March 23, 1990.
DOE will keep NRC informed.

' Construction' Schedule'-
DOE plans to begin construction on April 1, 1990.
They requested that the NRC cover review be completed by the start of construction, noting that if the design is modified, this request is not' plausible.
NRC responded that they would be as responsive as possible, but that there were other commitments made for that time period.
