the problem of disposing of radioactive waste. As you point out it is a difficult national problem, however, there are no simple sosutions. Attached are two papers that discuss some aspects of radioactive waste disposal in this l
country. Disposing of waste in the ocean was practiced in the 50's and 60's, however, there were a number of technical problems with this approach. When L
these problems were discussed at the London Dumping convention in 1970, an international agreement was reached to stop disposal of radioactive waste in
- the ocean.

As described in the attached papers, disposal of radioactive waste in the i
United States is limited to near surf ace disposal for low-level waste and deep l'
geologic burial for high-level waste.

Dear Mr. Wilde:
Thank you for expressing your concern regarding nuclear waste disposal.
You have suggested that perhaps nuclear waste could be placed into subduction zones such that the waste would be " pulled" into the earth's mantle. This method would remove nuclear waste from nan's environment, but given current technology it is not feasible. Safe disposal methods that our nation uses are discussed in two papers we have enclosed. One paper is a brief introduction to high-level and low;1evel waste disposal. The other paper covers low-level wastedisposalandrehulations.
