REVIEW OF AMERSHAM PACKAGE MODEL N0. 3100A I have reviewed the shielding section of the application for the Amersham Model No. 3100A package, Docket No. 71-9237, and have the follcwing comments.
1 1.
The cporating procedures for loading the cask should have the following additions End modifications:
a.
Add a note that a damaged tungsten shielding disc or shield rod for the drain line, is to be replaced.
b.
Change the radiation survey procedure to a statement that the package external dose rate is to be checked by measurement prior to shipment and give the applicable limits (at cask and package and at the specified distance from the cask or par.kage surface} when the pac
<. age is shipped by regular means and when the surface package is shipped as exclusive use (i.e. full load).
c.
Correct the values for the allowable non-fixed external radioactive contamination (see 10 CFR $71.87 for regular and exclusive use shipments) and use the correct conversion from Bq to Ci.
d.
Correct the values for the allowable internal contamination levels of an empty package.
e.
Add a check'that the stainless steel shielding ring and the tungsten shielding disc are in place.
2.
The applicant should discuss the expected rate and completeness of water draintge from the package when the tungsten shielding disc is in place.
3.
The applicant should provide legible drawings especially #0A23527.
Indicate the position of the purge plug.
