%\\.y,.**f NOV 17.1981 MEMORANDUM FOR: Franz P. Schauer, Chief Structural Engineering Branch Division of Engineering THRU:
David C. Jeng, Section A. Leadern Structural Engineering Branch V j Division of Engineering FROM Romueld E. Lipinski Structural Engineering Branch Division of Engineering
SUBJECT:
TRIP REPORT ON AUDIT MEETING AT SARGENT & LUNDY FOR BYRON PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 Nilesh Chokshi and I conducted structural design audit of Byron Plant Units 1 l
and 2 at the office of Sargent & LLndy in Chicago, Ill., on October 20 through The design of the containment and other Category I structures were 23, 1981.
audited for design criteria and execution of the design to incorporate these criteria. A list of attendees is enclosed. The following were the highlights of the audit.
1.
The reevaluation of Byron /Braidwood strui:tures was discussed. The structures were reviewed against the Marble Hill structures by comparing the respective design drawings. All elements which are unique for Byron plant were identified. The unique Byron /Braidwood elements were reviewed for the Marble Hill SSE loading conditions and.according to the criteria con-tained in Enclosure I to the. Memorandum from J. Knight to R. Tedesco dated Quly20,1981. The quick review of the results is as follows:
a) Containment Structure - stresses are below the design basis allowables.
l b) Containment Internal Structures - stresses are within design basis allow bles, c) Auxiliary / Fuel Handling Building -
i (1) Basemat - stresses are below yield strength, i
(2) Shear Walls - vertical reinforcement for all walls maintain a stress level below yield strength.
The horizontal reinforcement is also below yield for all walls except one which is 3.5 percent above the yield stress.
The final report on reevaluation is scheduled for December 1981.

Franz P. Schauer, Chief E 2.- The applicant requested additional' guidance on analysis of containment ultimate capacity and. masonry walls..The requested clarification of our position is being provided to the applicant at the time of this writing.
3.- We-reviewed ~all. major Categ'ory I structures proceeding from design assumptions through to verification of randomly selected engineering drawings.
4.
Thirtyaction.itemswereformulatedattheendofthemeetingcoYering questions to be resolved and additional information requested. These items-were divided into three groups. The first group of information was handed to us at the end of the meeting, in time for resolution before the draft SER which is due on November 6, 1981. The second group of information'is 4
scheduled to reach SEB on November 16, 1981, and the third on December 1, 1981, so that these items may be resolved before the due date of the final SER, January 7, 1982.
Inconclusion, thistripforauditmeetingisheryfruitfulinhiewofthehast technical area that has been covered, the depth of review and auditing and the
. efficiency accomplished within a tight schedule. The applicant has been very cooperative and prompt in producing calculations and explanations on the spot, thus eliminating time delay in transmitting documents and communication. We were also able to make fast discussions and resolutions in many issues which would.otherwise take numerous conference calls and weeks of delay. The audit has, no doubt, contributed tremendously toward a timely preparation of the SER input.
