WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 1 - IE INSPECTION REPORT NO. 81-21, DOCKET NO. 50-358, CONSTRUCTION PERMIT CPPR-88, W.O. 57300-957, JOB E-5590 Gentlemen:

This letter constitutes our follow-up response to the item of non-com-pliance indicated in the above referenced inspection report. It is our opinion that nothing in the report or in this response is proprietary in nature.

In regard to the items of non-compliance listed in appendix A, notice of violation, our response is as follows:

"... Shim thickness was not selected so the total thickness being radiographed under the penetrameter was the same as the weld thick -

ness.

In addition, when the source was placed on the axis of the object being radiographed with a single exposure, there was not at least three uniformly spaced penetrameters.

(A) Corrective Action Taken and Results Achieved.

The two welds involved in this inspection report were CY-606 and WR-4.

Weld WR-4 was cut from the line and replaced with weld K-2031 in accor-dance with Engineering Change Request (ECR) Number 1149 as reported to you in our interim response dated September 25, 1981. We therefore consider weld WR-4 to be properly dispositioned and removed from further consideration.

The line containing weld CY-606 was uncovered, drained and weld CY-606 was re-radiographed using properly spaced and properly shimmed penetrameters.
