Dear Mr. Denton:

-i The following provides the fog monitoring program description which KG&E committed to provide in the response to NRC safety review question 451.05WC.
The Wolf Creek fog study will begin during early 1982 and will continue through the first refueling. The instrument used during this study is a Fog Visiometer produced by Meteorology Research, Inc.
This instrument will be equipped with a strip-chart recorder so that 24-hour surveillance of fog conditions is possible. The area selected for study is about one-half mile east of U.S.
75, along the KG&E makeup water pipeline in Section 11, Range 15 East, Township 21 South in Coffey County. This location was selected because computer modeling indicates this area may have a higher incidence of fog occurrence than other locations along U.S. 75 (
Reference:
WCGS-ER(OLS) Tables 5.1-3, 5.1-4, 5.1-5). The instrument will be set for a minimum visibility of 330 ft. (which by Kansas Highway Patrol standards constitutes a very dangerous driving condition) and a maximum visibility of 6.25 miles.
The Fog Visiometer is a back-scatter type of visibility monitoring. The instrument has a light source and sensor in the same housing unit. The source emits a type of ultraviolet light to which the sensor is responsive.
However, the sensor will not detect any ambient white light. The theory behind the instrument is that the more light which is scattered (and detected by the sensor) indicates a decrease in visibility. This instrument does not differentiate between decreased visibility caused by fog or by other sources such as dust or insects; but, by comparison of the strip chart with on-site meteorological data, one can make that differentiation.
Routine maintenance on this piece of equipment once a week involves cleaning the light source and sensor, and checking the recorder for proper operation.

-v Mr. Harold R. Denton KMLNRC 81-138 November 24, 1981 The strip chart provides a record of changes of visibility which facilitates data analysis.
