SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OFNOVEMBER5,.19.81MEQIRG.,REGARDINGOPERATINGLICENSE.
REVIEW The purpose of the meeting was.to. hear, appl.icant's.p.lans for on-site storage of low-level radioactive solid waste. Enclosure 1. is a list of. attendees. is a copy of slides used.in the presentation.. Notes providing additional verbal information from the meeting are. in handwriting in appropriate-places in Enclosure 2.
The building to house low level wastes will be an. annex to the present radwaste building. Spant resins and concentrates will. be. solidified in asphalt, put in 55 gallon drums and stored in one part of.the building. Dry active wastes will be compacted, put in 55 gallon drums and_ stored in another. oart of the building.
The building is designed to acconnodate a maximum of 5000 drums of solidified waste and 5000 drums of dry active waste in 5.. years. Drums will be packaged to meet Federal and State regulations for shipment and burial and will be shipped as rapidly as burial grounds will accept them.
The onsite low level soild waste storage building and eauipment will be designed in accordance with Standard Review Plan Section.11.4, Appendix 11.4-A, " Design Guidance for Temporary Onsite Storage of Low Level Radioactive Waste." Staff
~
said that consideration of natural phenomena, shoul.d b'e described when'the design is submitted (e.g., protection for__ flooding).. Staff also suggested that applic-able requirements in 10 CFR Part 61 "Licens.ing R,equirements for Land Disposal of_
Radioactive Waste" be considered (e.g., long-lived radioisotopes).
Applicant said it is considering filing for a separate license under.10 CFR Part 30, as some other applicant's have done: however, it may provide the information in the FSAR as a part of _ the_ Fermi. 2 operating license application.
