20555 Attn:

Mr. V. Benaroya Gentlemen:

Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report, Fermi Nuclear Station, Unit 2 The fire protection safety evaluation report for Fermi Nuclear Station, Unit 2, dated May, 1981, titled " Chemical Engineering Branch / Fire Protection Section, Fire Protection Review, Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant, Unit 2, Docket No. 50-341," has been reviewed.

The report adequately reflects our concerns and recom-mendations.

We conclude that upon implementation of the modifications listed in the report and the resolution to the Staff's and our satisfac-tion of the one open item iCantified in the report, the fire pro-tection program will be acceptable.

Our review was based on the guidelines set forth in Appendix A to Branch Technical Position APCSB 9.5-1 and Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, but did not include a review by GBA of fire brigade training, administrative controls or technical specifications.

The review process of the plant's fire protection program was a joint effort of NRC and GBA staff personnel, and frequent contact was maintained during the review process.

However, the GBA con-clusions, as stated herein, are based on an independent evaluation of documents submitted by Detroit Edison, of conditions noted during a site visit in May 1981, and of documents supplied in re-sponse to requests for information generated during the evaluation.

Very truly yours, 11704o4 011106 Ben M. Coh F
