Attn:

Mr. V. Benaroya fO-hN Gentlemen:

Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report, Shoreham Nuclear Station, Unit 1 The fire protection safety evaluation report for Shoreham Nuclear Station Unit 1, dated June 25, 1981 and supplements dated August 20, 1981 and October 30, 1981, titled " Chemical Engineering Branch / Fire Protection Section, Fire Protection Review, Shoreham Nuclear Station Unit 1, Docket No. 50-322," has been reviewed.

The report adequately reflects our concerns and recommendations.

We conclude that upon implementation of the modifications listed in the report, the fire protection program will be acceptable.

Our review was based on the guidelines set forth in Appendix A to Branch Technical Position APCSB 9.5-1 and Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, but did not include a review by GBA of fire brigade training, admin-istrative controls or technical specifications.

The review process of the plant's fire protection program was a joint effort of NRC and GBA staff personnel, and frequent contact was maintained during the review process.

However, the GBA conclu-sions, as stated herein, are based on an independent evaluation of documents submitted by Long Island Lighting Company, of conditions noted during a site visit in November 1977, and of documents sup-plied in response to requests for information generated during the evaluation.

Very truly yours, A
