Gentlemen:
On October 9,1981, Mr. Richard Knop, Region III, USNRC, was advised of a Significant Deficiency involving Bergen Paterson sway struts deliverec for use on the Callaway and Wolf Creek units. The deficiencies involve failure of Bergen Paterson Size No. 6 and Size No. 15 sway strut units to provide the cone of movement required by design specifications. These deficiencies were identified in the course of inspection at the two job-sites and were reported per 10CFR50.55(e) as a generic problem applica-ble to both SNUPPS units. Mr. Knop was advised that a written report would be submited within the 30 day limit specified by governing regulations.
The purpose of this letter is to inform the NRC of a delay in submittal of the anticipated report. The reason for this delay is to permit a series of tests to be performed by Bergen Paterson to determine the func-tional and safety significance of the reported deficiencies. The test program anticipated will simulate worse case installed conditions for both the No. 6 and No. 15 units, subjecting them to loading up to a faulted condition. The results of this testing will be analyzed in order to accurately determine the significance of the reported defi-ciencies.
