Dear Mrs. Steinberg:

'/g Enclosed please find a letter from Saunders-Roe Development, Inc. requesting an amendment to its export license XB001010. The license presently authorizes the export of 1,000,000 curies of tritium gas to the U.K. for the production of sealed light sources. The expiration date of the license was recently extended from September 15, 1981 to September 15, 1982 by NRC, after Department of State approval.

The license allows the material to be exported in individual shipments of up to 30,000 curies with no more than 2 shipments in any single month, or a total of 60,000 curies of material authorized for export per month.

Saunders-Roe has requested that the present 2 shipments authorized each month under the license be increased to 4 shipments per month to allow flexibility in meeting demand. The proposed increase would permit 120,000 curies of tritium gas to be exported each month to the U.K.

Before taking action on this license amendment, we would appreciate your views, in accordance with established procedures, as to whether the proposed-amendment meets the applicable criteria in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 as amended by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Act of 1978.

Sincerely, dLn,um b.
