Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

[

'd River Bend Station-Unit 1 Docket No. 50 h58

,, $se Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) aas completed our investigation l

of the reportable 10CFR50.55(e) dificiency concerning questionable Delaval supplied valve springs. This letter is the 30 day follow-up report referenced in our October 5,1981, letter to your office.

The improperly shot-peened va!.ve springs manufactured by Mulrose Spring and Tool Works have been discovered in the two Transamerica-4 Delaval supplied diesel engines at River Bend Station. All sixty-four (64) intake and exhaust valve springs (32 in each engine) were identified as having the markings of the defective springs specified by the supplier.

(painted grey with a brown stripe). GSU will replace the defective valve springs with new springs procured from Delaval. Nonconformance and i

Disposition Report 1780 has been generated to control this problem. This action vill be completed at the time ^f installation of the engines, currently scheduled for the last quart, r of 1982.

This concludes GSU's evaluation and corrective action concerning this problem.

Sincerely,

{
