Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

Eu G,

River Bend Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50- % 8/ ff On September 1h, 1981, Gulf States Utilities informed the NRC Region IV office of a concern potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).

This letter is a summary status report that GSU committed to provide.

Gulf States Utilities (GSb) specifies ASTM A-500 Grade B-structural tubing for use in component supports at River Bend Station. During efforts in April-June, 1981 to procure this material, GSU became aware that this material is sub, ject to strain age hardening that occurs in cold worked materials after manufacture. Strain aging increases strength but reduces ductility (as measured by 5 elongation) below the minimum defined by ASTM. Subsequent evaluation of this concern by our Architect Engineer (Stone & Webster) confirmed that loss of elongation.is not a necessary parameter in the River Bend Station design because the supports are designed in the elastic region below the yield strength for the material. For this reason the pipe rapport design is not in question.

Because of the design of the supports, at no time would the health and safety of the public have been in danger had this condition gone un-discovered.

Gulf States has the documentation under review at this time to assure that A-500 material received on site ets the requirements on the ASTM specification, as manufactured. No corrective action has been required 6110270026 811012 PDR ADOCK 05000450 76 e27 s
