NRC STAFF RESPONSE TO JOINT INTERVENORS' MAILGRAM REQUESTING SCHEDULE MODIFICATION By mailgram dated October 19, 1981, Joint Intervenors have re-quested an extension of time in which to respond to mtions for summary disposition filed by the Staff and Applicant and a corresponding delay in the hearing schedule established by the Board in its Memorandum and Order of September 24,1981 (a schedule previously agreed to by the JointIntervenors). The sole justification expressed in the mailgram for the delay is Joint Intervenors' "need for further discovery from applicant." The mailgram also stated that a " motion will follow."

Without waiving its right to respond to any formal motion Joint Intervenors might file, the NRC Staff wishes to inform the Board that it opposes the proposed delay in the Board's schedule.

Joint Intervenors have taken full advantage of the two rounds of discovery established by the Board in its Special Prehearing Conference Order of April 21, 1981; i
