A PEACH BOTTOM ATOMIC POWER STATION NARRATIVE
SUMMARY
OF OPERATING EXPERIENCES SEPTEMBER 1981 UNIT 2 OPERATIONS The unit began the month at 99% power.
On September 4, load was reduced to approximately 78% power to repair a leaking sensing line to the "A" Electro-Hydraulic Control pump pressure regulator.
The unit was returned to full power the next morning.
On September 9, the E-4 Diesel Generator was blocked to repair' a cooling water gasket leak.
On September 11, the E-4 Diesel Generator was again blocked for repair of a similar leak.
During the diesel operability test following the repair, the diesel failed to start.
The failure to start was immediately investigated, but could not be repeated.
In order to permit Recirculation Pomp M-G Set slip ring polishing, power was reduced to 48% on September.18.
Early on September 20, the 2A Recirculation Pump motor low oil level alarm was received.
The pump was take:4 out of service and the unit shutdown.
Three quarts of oil were added to the lower bearing and a leaking oil fitting was repaired.
The unit was returned to power early on September 21.
Later on the same day, the E-4 Diesel Generator failed to start during a surveillance test.
Inspection revealed that a closed turbocharger jacket cooling water outlet valve had caused overheating of the turbocharger and failure of an internal water seal gasket.
Entry of cooling water into one of the cylinders from the exhaust line caused damage to the associated pistons and the vertical drive which connects the upper anc 'ouer crank shafts.
On September 23, the HPCI gland seal condenser bottom head gasket failed.
The gasket was replaced and the HPCI system was returned to operable status within seven hours.
A temporary Technical Specificati~on change was granted on September 28 to allow continued power operation for three days beyond the normal seven days allowed while the E-4 Diesel Generater remained out-of-
. service.
At the end of the month, the acceptance testing for the E-4 Diesel Generator das in progress and the unit was operating at 95% power.
UNIT 3 OPERATIONS The unit remained shutdown for the scheduled refueling, maintenance and major modification outage.
The major activities completed this month were completion of the Integrated Leak Rate Test (ILRT), repair of the main turbine turning gear, repair of the 3C RHR pump motor, test run of the 3B Recirculation pump and the HPCI turbine cverspeed trip test.
At the end of the month, startup of the unit awaited return of the E-4 Diesel Generator to service and completion of the Loss of Power tests.
