Dear Mrs. Taylor:
hes Your letter postcarked August 26, 1961 and addressed to the huclear Regulatory Comission has been referred to n.e f or reply. Your letter requests intoriaation regarding locations of nuclear reactors and nuclear waste dumping areas within the State of riichigan.
As you n;ay knos, the prime function of the United States I:uclear Regulatory Cc:.nission is to safeguard tne public healtn and safety in matters concerning nuclear reactors and radioactive material. Therefore, all power reactors, test reactors, uranium fuel f abrication and processing facilities as well as radioactive material waste disposal facilities must be licensec by the U. 5. Nuclear Regulatory Cor. mission.
As shown on Table 1 attached to tnis letter, there are seven " power reactors" either in operation or under construction in the State of 111chigan. Power reactors are those reactors wnose purpose is to generate electrical energy.
The approximate geographical locations of these seven are shown on Figure 1, also attached to this letter. Those reactors already in operation are shown as squares and the reactors presently under construction (but not yet licensed to operate) are shown as triangles on the figure. Also listea o Figure 1 is the riailing adaress anj telephone number of tne regional,p dpiYi f,4 of the Nuclear degulatory Coumission for your area (Region III). W H hc. of h

The three power reactors under construction are located as follows:
Hidland Plant, Unit ho.1 - This reactor plant is located in Hidland, hicnigan eno is being Duilt by Consumers Power Company. It is expected to receive an operating license in late 1983. In addition to providing electricity, it will also supply process steam to the adjacent Dow Chenical Plant.
Midland Plant, Unit ho. 2 - Being built at the same location by che same utility as.Mioland Unit 40. 1, this unit is expected to receive an operating license in mid-1983.
I Enrico Feriai Unit ho. 2 - This reactor plant is being constructed at a site approximately S miles north of Monrec, titchigan called Loguna deach, Michigan. The utility builoing the plant is Detroit Edison.
Construction is expected to be coa:plete in hovember 1992 and an operating license is expected shortly thereaf ter. Enrico Ferni Unit tio. I was a small prototype reactor that is no longer operating for economic reasons (all fuel has been renoved).
In addition to the power reactors discussed above, there are presently three small research reactors located in Michigan. Their specific locations are the fiorth Ann Arbor campus of the University ot 111chigan, inicnigan State University (East Lansing) and the Dow Chemical Plant in Midland, Michigan.
There are no radioactive raaterial waste disposal sites (nuclear waste dumping sites) or uranium fuel faurication/ processing facilities in the Statt: of Michigan.
