Docket Nos. 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Report of Fire Pump Inoperability During Refueling Outage Maintenance This report is being submitted in accordance with Section 3.14.B.2 of the Appendix A Technical Specifications for the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant.
During the refueling outage of Unit No. 1 now in progress, maintenance will be performed on the circulating water pumps. To remove the pumps, the respective water intake bays must be isolated and drained. Removing the water supply also affects the operability of fire pumps in the bays-We estimate No. 121 motor-drive fire pump will be out of service for ten days and No. 122 diesel-driven fire pump will be out of service for 14 days.
When a fire pump is made inoperable, the alternate fire pump and the backup (screen wash) pump will be run daily. In addition, the work procedure specifies that the eight crossover valves from the safety-grade cooling water system will be opened. Opening these valves provides a backup supply of water to the fire system under all conditions, including loss of off-site power.
