3 Facility: Big Rock Point Plant.

Identification: Degradat, ion of control rod drive pump oil.
5 Conditions Prior to Occurrence: Cold shutdown.

Description of Occurrence: The control rod drive punp piston cooling water flov exceeded the drain capacity of the piscoa cavity such that bM,h control rod drive pump piston cavities beca:ne flooded and exces-sive water was drawn into the crankcase / gearcase reservoir of each punp. The oil was replaced in both punpa and no other desage or operating probles occurred.
7 Designati,a of Apparent Cause: Investigation is continuing to detemine adequacy of drain (s) and/or possibility of operator error and/cr procedural deficiency.

Analysis of Occurrence: Loss of the control rod drive pu=ps while at power vould deprive the control rod drives of cooling vater.
This is nomally caintained auch that the control rod drive temper-eture t.s neasured by the indicating tube thernocouple is less than 350 F.
Drive serem capability a verified by the manufe.cturer's engineering tests in 1962 at up to h20'F on the indicating tube thermocouple. Since the plant was in cold chutdown and punps were still operable under the condition that existed, it is our opinion that nc undue hazard existed at the facility.
