For the Cont'ract period October 1,-1980 through September 30, 1981 Article A-I RESEARCH TO PI PERFORMED BY CONTRACTOR (a)

The unclassified scope of work under this contract entitled " Bubble Behavior in LMFBR Core Disruptive Accidents" is as follows:

Subtask 1.

Two Phase Bubble Heat and Mass Transport and Bubble Dynamics A.

Under-water Tests s

Continue application of the UVABUBL code to underwater FAST tests until satisfactory agreement is reached between theory and experi-ments.

B.

Under-sodium Tests ApplyUVABUBLtothepre-testpredictionsoftheFASTtestswith

sodium with emphasis on assisting ORNL in uncertainty analysis of FAST used in assessing adequacy and for reactor applications modeling.

C.

Model Development Complete a series of model improvenients currently in progress.

These include:

(1) Mass flow of UO2 into the bubble.

(2) Condensation of coolant vapor form the bubble.

(3) Acoustic constraint during the initial expansior, phase.

(4) Updating bubble emissivity and sodium properties will have a lower priority than C (1), (2), and (3).

Subtask 2.

Flashing Fragmentation Experiment and Analysis Obtain particle size distrutions for hydrodynamic fragmentation during the flashing process with water using the experimental apparatus developed in FY 1980.

Limit test superheats to the 500C to 750C range and use data-to develop correlations of particle size and expansion parameters.

Review of Outstanding Issues on Core Disruptive Accidents The contractor will review unresolved technical issues associated with N,

Core Disruptive Accidents (CDA).

The review should include an assess-ment of work sponsored by the NRC, DOE, the nuclear industry, and in foreign programs.

Develop a list of unresolved issues and correlate this with relevant research currently underway.

Prepare a draft report which contrasts the current needs with proposed work in order to develop a time scale for the resolution of CDA issues and to point out any issues which are not being addressed.

(b) The Principal Investigator expects to devote the following approximate amount (s) of time to the contract work:
