Dear Mr. Miller:

'M" Reference your letter with enclosure (List of Questions), dated 2 September 1981.

Request a 30-day extension, beyond the originally established response date of 19 September 1981, be granted for submission of our response concerning the aforementioned correspondence.

The basis for this request, as discussed telephonically on 9 September 1981 by Major Ronald R. Smoker, AFRRI, and Mr. Robert Carter, USNRC, is due to the current workload dealing with the overall relicensing procedures and heavy operational requirements of our staff. During the telephone conversation Mr. Carter stated that he did not see any problem with the extension, however he said that he did not have the authority to authorize it and that this request should be initiated.

Based on the receipt date of your correspondence,4 September 1981, the approval of this request would provide a new response date tar our submission to 19 October 1901.

Your consideration and timely action regarding this request is appreciated. Should you have any questions or require additional information concerning this matter, please contact Major Ronald R. Smoker, Chief, Radiation Sources Division, 295-1096/1290.

Sincerely, N

PAUL E. TYLER Captain, MC, USN Director 0so 0 oho D
