Dear Mr. Keppler:
Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) hereby submits the following in response to IE Bulletin No. 81-03.
The numbering format used is consistent with that used in the Bulletin.
1.
This item requires the holders of construction permits to answer Items 1 and 4 that apply to holders of operating licenses.
- 1. No Mytilus sp. have been reported near Marble Hill in the Ohio River, the source and receiving water for the station. However, quarterly aquatic studies performed since 1977 have shown the presence of Corbicula sp. in the Ohio River near Marble Hill.
4.a.
Clams can ear ily enter the intake structure when they are in the I
larval stage.
Pipeline flow can then carry them to the cooling water systems.
4.b.
PSI is currently monitoring industry methods and their effectiveness. Tentatively, PSI plans to chemically treat the cooling water systems. Other industry programs such as periodic inspection and cleaning of heat exchangers cooled by service water or monitoring of flow degradation in heat~ exchangers through the use of differential pressure gauges may be implemented. Also, any newly developed methe. s of clam control that are proven effective will be considered for use.
2.
At this time no potentially affected sy' stems have been filled with river water.
Water being used during the construction phase for fire protection, potable water, and other construction uses is obtained from wells.

Section 2.7 of the Environmental Report Construction Permit Stage describes the aquatic ecology of the Ohio River near Marble 11111.
Since 1977, continuing aquatic studies have taken place in the Ohio River near Marble Hill on a quarterly basis. The last sample date of May 25, 1981 i
reported Corbicula sp. present.
3.b.
Potentially affected systems include the safety-related Essential Service Water System along with the non-safety-related Fire Protection System, Non-Essential Service Water System, and Circulating Water System.
