M Attention:

Mr. Donald Horton S'l 'M '

Quality Assurance Manager

Subject:

Licensing Event Report Arkansas Nuclear Unit #1 54" Pratt Containment Purge Valves Maximum Valve Opening Angles Gentlemen:

This letter is to document the verbal report made to you on June 26, 19 81, at 3 : 4 0 P.M., CDT.

It has been brought to our attention by the NRC that some nuclear plants have restricted the opening angle of purge valves based on prelimini, calculations indicating that a 650' maximum valve opening angle would be adequate to resist LOCA closing forces for large valves.

Several Pratt analyses considering sonic effects have indi-cated maximum valve opening angles of 30 to 55 depending on qpecific equipment and conditions to avoid exceeding the actuator manufacturer's rating and/or overstressing valve components.

~

Accordingly, we recommend that a maximum valve opening angle of 30 (from full closed) be utilized for 48" and 0

54" Pratt containment purge valves pending a specific analysis
