Date: August 20, 1981 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--PNS-I 18 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

United Nuclear Corporation - Naval Products Uncasville, Connecticut (DN 70-371)
Subject:
BOM8 THREAT At approximately 11:38 p.m. August 19, 1981, UNC Naval Products received a phone call from an unidentified male who stated "It's supposed to go off at 2:00 o' clock" Both cursory and follow-on detailed searches of plant internal and external areas were completed. At 12:30 a.m., August 20, 1981, the licensee's " Crisis Management Committee" was formed on site.
Based on the results of the detailed search, the site was declared a " safe area" and normal plant operations resumed at 4:35 a.m., August 20, 1981.
The IAT has been notified.
The Connecticut State Police were notified.
Region I and the licensee have notified the FBI.
The State of Connecticut has been notified.
This preliminary notification is issued for information and no further action by IE is anticipated.
No press release is planned by the licensee or NRC at this time.
NRC Region I (l'hiladelphia) received notification of this occurrence from the Headquarters Duty Officer on August 20, 1981 at approximately 12:20 a.m.
