Vogtle Electric Generating Plant - Units 1 & 2 50-424; 50-425; Interim Reports dated 7/23/80 and 11/11/80 Gentlemen:
Georgia Power Company has previously reported a potential deficiency to the NRC concerning centrifugal charging pump operation following secon-dary side high energy line ruptures.
In our previous interim report of November 11, 1980, Georgia Power Company advised that it was expected that a final report concerning correc-tive action would be submitted by April 1, 1981.
Westinghouse has advised that a proposed solution is being reviewed. After appropriate approval, a generic solution will be distributed to electric utilities having Westinghouse reactors. Georgia Power Company expects to submit a report i
concerning the corrective action that will be taken to resolve this issue on or before December 18, 1981.
Additionally, Westinghouse has advised the NRC of a problem concerning the pump shafts of the centrifugal charging pumps. The pumps currently at Plant Vogtle have the "old" balance drum locknut design. Arrangements will be made to have the locknuts exchanged for ones of the latest design.
