Subject:
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units Nos.1 & 2; Dockets Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Restonse to NUREG-0737 Item II.K.3.5 Gentlemen:
The subject Action Plan item recommended installation of a system to automatically trip the reactor coolant pumps in the event of a loss of coolant accident. We do not find installation of such a system varranted at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.
A system which automatically trips reactor coolant pumps may actually degrade plant safety. First, the failure of such a system provides a new initiator of a potentially severe event (loss of flow). Second, there are transients which, though similar to a loss of coolant accident, are aggravated by loss of flow. Our reactor c,perators have been provided with adequate indication and training to identify situations where reactor coolant pump tripping is required and to respond appropriately.
If any additional information is required, we would be pleased to provide it to you.
Very truly yours, P
