Dear Senator,
S'impson:
During tbo Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Regulation's March 9, 1994 hearing on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's user fees, Dale Alberts, President of the Wyoming Mining Association, discussed his experience with the NRC relating to the Uranium Recovery Field Office (URFO) closure.
I know that you expressed your concern during the hearing and indicated your intention to follow up after the hearing.
I, too, have been very concerned about this issue and following the hearing discussed with the NRC's Executive Director for Operations ways to improve NRC's coordination and consultation with the uranium nining industry.
In particular, I am sensitive to the fact that with the pending closure of our URFO office, it may be more dif ficult for those from the mining industry to have good communications with NRC regulators.
Consequently, I asked that our Region IV operations and our Headquarters uranium licensing staff keep the industry informed of developments affecting them.
In this connection, I am pleased to see that our staff is succeeding in achieving this goal, as recognized in the enclosed letter to the NRC from Mr. Alberts.
Sincerely, ytv Ivan Selin
