May 5, 1994 CHAlHMAN 1

The Honorable Charles B.

Curtis Under Secretary of Energy I

Washington, D.C.

20585

Dear Mr. Curtis:

Thank you for your letter of April 21, 1994, regarding initiatives of the Interagency Working Group and the Department of Energy on options for the disposition of surplus plutonium j

from nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, due to previously schedule-l travel plans,- I expected to be unavailable to attend the May 4 and 5, 1994 meetings for stakeholders.

In light of the impor-

]

tance of these meetings, I asked the Executive Director for Operations to designate a senior representative of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to attend.

Mr. Robert M.

Bernero, Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, participated in the May 4 meeting and presented NRC views on the draft documents provided.

A member of Mr. Bernero's staff is P anning to attend the May 5 meeting.

l The Commission appreciates the opportunity to participate and hopes that both meetings are successful.

l Sincerely, i

M l
