February 03, 2020 MEMORANDUM TO: Eric Benner, Director Division of Engineering and External Hazards Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM: Michael Cheok, Director /RA/

Division of Risk Assessment Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

RESEARCH INFORMATION LETTER RIL-2001, PROCEEDINGS OF NRC ANNUAL PROBABILISTIC FLOOD HAZARD ASSESSMENT RESEARCH WORKSHOPS I-IV, 2015-2019 Enclosed, for your information is the Research Information Letter, which is publicly available in ADAMS (ML20028G306) and on NRCs external website. This RIL documents the agenda, abstracts, slides for oral presentations and summarized questions answer periods for the 1st through 4th NRC Annual Probabilistic Flood Hazard Assessment (PFHA) Research Workshops held at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Headquarters in Rockville, MD from 2015-2019.

The annual workshops are held to respond to an element of the PFHA Research Program and User Need, which states that RES also, will plan and organize annual PFHA Research Program Workshops to communicate results, and assess progress, collect feedback and chart future activities. These workshops will bring together NRC staff and management from RES and User Offices, technical support contractors, as well as interagency and international collaborators.

The first workshop was an internal meeting attended by NRC staff, contractors, and partner Federal agencies. The following workshops were public meetings and attended by members of the public; NRC technical staff, management, and contractors; and staff from other Federal agencies. All of the workshops began with an introductory session that included perspectives and research program highlights from RES and also may have included perspectives from the NRC Office of New Reactors and Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and industry representatives. NRC and EPRI contractors and staff as well as invited Federal and public speakers gave technical presentations and participated in various styles of panel discussion. Clarifying questions and comments were addressed.

E. Benner As part of the planning for the 5th Annual PFHA workshop (scheduled to be held from February 19 to 21, 2020), a common request from previous and potential participants was for the NRC to publish workshop abstracts, slides and presentations from previous workshop to enhance knowledge management and facility future discussion and research. This RIL is responsive to that request. The staff plans to continue to publish workshop slide and presentation materials from all upcoming workshops, so they are publicly available.

Please feel free to notify the responsible RES contact if you have any questions concerning the impending publication of this report.
