fDR MEMORANDUM TO THE FILE
SUBJECT:
AMENDMENT REQUEST TO ALLOW THE EXPORT OF 100,000 CURIES OF TRITIUM GAS TO THE U.K. (XB001010, AMENDMENT 06)
Export License XB001010 allows the export of 2,000,000 curies of tritium gas to the U.K. for use in the production of sealed light sources. The license is conditioned to allow the export of only a maximum of 30,000 curies for each individual shipment and not more than 4 shipments per month for a total of 120,000 curies per month. Joe Ratledge, Oak Ridge Isotope Sales, has. advised that Saunder-Roe requires 100,000 curies of tritium insnediately.
Normally, Oak Ridge would ship'the material in 4 30,000 curie con-tainers to keep within the limits of the license condition. However, a t this time, no 30,000 curie container is available.. In light of this Oak Ridge has requested, on behalf of Saunders-Roe, a one time amendment to allow the shipment of one 100,000 curie container to the U.K.
Oak Ridge and Saunders-Roe, U.K., have supplied written requests for this amendment.
Oak Ridge advised'NRC on December 20'that IAEA and U.K. authorities have granted Saunders-Roe permission to receive this amount of. tritium-a t one time.
Because this condition was placed on the license by the Executive Branch, IP advised Robin DeLaBarre, DOS, of the request. Robin advised that the Executive Branch agencies have no objection to this one time export of 100,000 curies of tritium gas.
(He obtained telephonic approval from DOE, D0D, State /PM, ACDA, and State /Stoiber.)
