Dear Mr. Erickson:

Reference:

Docket #50-141 On Decerrber 8,1982, we received a call from Emalio Garcia of the NCR Region V Office in Walnut Creek, CA, indicating the results of treasurements taken by the Region V Iab to independently evaluate the residual activity in the Stanford Pool Reactor Facility. He indicated that in addition to the nuclides reported in our correspcndence dated June 3,1980, the Regional Laboratory fot.nd an additional nuclide, namely Europium-154.

After the report John IIolmes reviewed the counting results from our analyses and found presence of the this nuclide in sanples, identified in our June 3,1980 correspondence as 4-1, are 4 -2.

The ratio of Europium 152 to Europi um-154 activity was 17:1 - or nearly the theoretical ratio based upon abundance, cross-section, and half-life. The peaks associated with Eu-154 were not apparent in the sanples with 1cwer activities, thus we missed them in our reporting.

i We do not believe that this finding would alter our conclusions regarding the hazards associated with the residual activity, nor does it change any statements made in our letter to Mr. James R. Miller dated April 28, 1982.

l l

We hope that the confinintory findings by the Region V Office will nove this problem to final resolution, i.e. allowing deccxrmissioning of the i

Ryan Laboratory Facilities.

l Very truly yours, dL Wrm ROLAND A. FINSKU, P11.D.
