SACRAMENTO MUNICIPAL UTILITY DISTRICT O 6201 S Street. Box 15830 Sacramento, California 95813; (916) 452 3211 December 3, 1982 DIRECTOR OF NUCLEAR REACTOR REGULATION ATTENTION JOHN F STOLZ CHIEF OPERATING REACTORS BRANCH 4 U S NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON DC 20555 DOCKET 50-312 RANCHO SECO NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION UNIT N0 1 The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the results of the fiberscope inspection of the leaking steam generator tube (Tube Number 77-2, A steam generator) and to give you our interpretation of this inspection.
A fiber optics probe was inserted into the leaking tube (77-2) and the crack was located. We observed an approximate 330 circumferential crack approximately.010" wide. There was some discoloration just above the crack.
The crack appeared to be a clean break except for a small area which appeared to have been contaminated with corrosion products washed in from the secondary side of the Steam Generator which obscured the surface. The crack exhibited the characteristic sharp peak which has been identified as being in the vicinity of the initiation point in tube samples from the Oconee 1 Lane Region.
The results of this inspection do not change the evaluation submitted to you l
in our letter dated December 1, 1982. Babcock and Wilcox will review the i
documentation of this inspection and will provide additional evaluation to the District as appropriate.
